There are three categories of undergraduate students and application for these categories is different. The categories are generic, economic fee paying, mature entry, weekend, Open and Distance eLearning (ODeL)and international students.
These are mostly Malawian students who respond to a call for applications that is released by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) on behalf of all of Malawi’s six public universities and students apply for programmes across all these public universities.

These are all students who may not have been selected under the generic category coordinated by the NCHE but still meet the requirements for the programmes of their choice. They apply in response to a call for non-generic selection application released this time by the university. The application is through filling of a designated application form and submitting it to the university through email. Students under this category pay the full economic fee of educating a student for an academic year as calculated by the university. Normally, it is higher than those paid by generic students.
These are students who apart from a high school qualification, they also hold a higher certificate or diploma in a field related to the programme they want to apply for. Normally these are higher certificates or diplomas offered in technical colleges or foreign examination bodies. In terms of application, they too apply in response to a call for non-generic selection application released by the university. The application is through filling of a designated application form and submitting it to the university through email. Students under this category pay the full economic fee of educating a student for an academic year as calculated by the university. Normally, it is higher than those paid by generic students.
These are students who have high school certificate but are too committed to manage full-time studies and prefer to study during weekends. Classes under this category are only offered at the university’s City campus in Blantyre, Chichiri area. Prospective students apply in response to a call for non-generic selection application released by the university. The application is through filling of a designated application form and submitting it to the university through email. Students under this category pay a higher fee than generic students but lower than the full economic fee. Only a selected number of programmes are available under this category.
These are students who have high school certificate but are too committed to manage full-time studies and prefer to study via online platforms. This category also admits mature entry students for some programmes. Classes under this category are only offered through online platforms with students allowed to come on campus once every semester for lab sessions and examinations. Prospective students apply in response to a call for non-generic selection application released by the university. The application is through filling of a designated application form and submitting it to the university through email. Students under this category pay the lowest fees, considering that most of their studies are online. Again, only a selected number of programmes are available under this category.
These are students who are not Malawians but are interested to study at the university. They also hold high school qualifications and pay different fees depending on where they are coming from i.e within SADC or outside it. Prospective students apply in response to a call for non-generic selection application under full economic fee category released by the university. The application is through filling of a designated application form and submitting it to the university through email.
