The orientation week that started on July 15, 2024 at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) marked the beginning of a new academic journey for first year students selected last year and this year.

Dean of Students’ Affairs Dr Kondwani Mkandawire said the orientation is critical as it prepared the new students for their academic journey in university.

“This orientation is mainly to ease their transition from secondary school to university life, offering a comprehensive introduction to the academic and social opportunities that lie ahead of them on campus,” said Dr Mkandawire.

On his part, Assistant Registrar (Academics) Dr Duncane Batizani urged the students to utilize the presence of the Dean of Students’ Affairs and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) when it comes to issues related to their social welfare.

“These are your support systems. They are here to give you direction and support you every step of the way,” said Dr Batizani.

Alexander Kude, SRC president, encouraged the students to work passionately and resiliently harder, saying hard work, focus, confidence and passion were critical for their success.

In an interview, one of the first year students, Kelvin Khoswe, who was selected to study Biomedical Engineering, said that he was very happy to have finally joined MUST.

“I’m over the moon to be here now because it has always been my dream to be part of this prestigious and beautiful university. I will work hard to keep my dream a reality,” he said.

Throughout this week, the new students are expected to participate in various activities, including campus tours to familiarize themselves with their new environment.
